The three criminal law bills, passed by the Lok Sabha on December 20 and the Rajya Sabha on December 21, got President’s assent on 25th December 2023 and they became new laws of the country as follows.
- The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 which proposes to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC),
- The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 which proposes to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and
- The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 which seeks to replace the Indian Evidence Act.
The laws will come into force on the date to be notified
The three laws will come into force on the date to be notified by the government.
The union government proposes to establish infrastructure, setup software in tune with the revised laws, and provide training to the officials by December 2024.
The new format for FIR, integrated Investigation Form etc will have to be integrated into the criminal tracking system for implementation of the new laws. There is still no clarity regarding how to be the supplement recharge sheet in crimes registered under the IPC.
